Long-lost
3rd Verse |
|
| |
| |
I was born to give and take
And as I keep growin' I'm gonna make some mistakes
The sun's gonna set and the bird is gonna wing, they do not lie
My last wish will be just one thing
Be smilin' when I die |

Not lost on

Brewer & Shipley recorded a third verse to "One Toke Over The Line" for
their Tarkio album in 1970. However, because songs over four
minutes long did not get as much airplay in those days, it was literally cut
from the master tape with a razor blade. Yet the verse is
still well known to
longtime fans of the duo. The extra
verse from Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer" is a similar
example that comes to mind.
Fans always cheer when they hear the extra verse in concert,
acknowledging to the artists that they recognize that they are receiving a
special insider treat that can only be heard live. |

Finding the
long-lost verse |
|
| |
With a little
searching, the unabridged version of "One Toke" with all three verses can be found
and enjoyed. There are at least
three sources, however, none of them are currently in release. The first is
Brewer & Shipley's live version found on their 1997
Archive Alive CD.
A second source, which is harder to find, is on
The Lost Live Album a bootleg 1971 radio broadcast. The third source
is a remake version that The Rainmakers recorded for
Hempilation II: Free The Weed CD in 1998.
The song is given a
'90s make over by The Rainmakers, and Brewer & Shipley themselves make a guest
appearance singing the long-lost third verse pretty much in their normal
style. It is a treat even if you already have either of the Brewer &
Shipley versions. |
