Wealthy Man

Yes I am a country boy

Live down in Missouri
Spending some time with the simple folk

Who never take the time to hurry

I've had my chances at fortune and fame

Treasure to astound me

I never wanted nothing in this old world

But to have a woman's arms around me

She could carry me down
She could ferry me across the sky

And help me to be a wealthy man

At least in my own eyes

I guess I was a sailor

I made the road my home

The only thing I hated in that old life

Was the nights that I spent alone

Sailed on out to L.A. for awhile

Felt like a dying ember

I never saw nothing in Hollywood
Was as pretty as the girls in Denver

They could carry me down
They could ferry me across the sky

And help me to be a wealthy man

At least in my own eyes

She could carry me down
She could ferry me across the sky

And help me to be a wealthy man

At least in my own eyes

In 1978, a recording of this Tom Shipley song was included in a Kansas City PBS show produced by Brewer & Shipley’s ex-bassist, Steve Baker.  Baker’s documentary "The Whole Dam Thing," raises awareness of issues surrounding a proposed Meramec Dam in Missouri.  Around the same time, Michael writes and Brewer & Shipley record the campaign song "Meramec Dam" that is used across the state in radio spots in opposition to the dam.  Later there is a statewide referendum about the project and the dam becomes the first ever decommissioned by the federal government.  This live version is from a 1978 show in Rosyln, New York at My Father's Place.
